It’s been a while since Tim Burton came up with something remarkable and last night, I managed to catch the sneak preview of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Tim Burton tends to give most of his movies a gothic feel, and this happens to be one of them. Sweeney Todd is filled with wicked blood-spattering scenes, a slight touch of black humor and impressive dreary backgrounds.
The movie brings us back to the 19th century where Benjamin Barker, also known as Sweeney Todd returns to London to seek revenge for the loss of his wife and daughter after being wrongly imprisoned by Judge Turpin. Besides being a barber, Todd is a serial killer. He provides shaves and haircuts to his customers with his trusted ‘friend’ – the razor and he slits open his victim’s throats on his barber chair. His partner in crime, Mrs. Lovett, is well known for baking the “worst pies” in London, which is gruesomely made from the corpses of Todd’s victims.
However, I was overwhelmed by the beautiful songs from the musical adaptation of Broadway composer, ‘Stephen Sondheim’. It was absolutely brilliant. The magnificent tunes made me want to sing along with them even though half the time everyone was drenched in blood.
Every element blended so well into the movie, especially the ghastly, inexplicable dark streets of London as the location. I reckon that really brought out the macabre sight which made me felt quite terrified at times. Then again, I would like to put is as a bloody fun horror film.
I must commend the excellent performances by both Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. Both of them were equally entertaining and amusing. Personally, I think Johnny Depp was superbly outstanding. From his role being Willy Wonka to Captain Jack Sparrow to the current Sweeney Todd is just incomprehensible. He is, undeniably, a talented actor.
Besides him, I was blown away by Sacha Baron Cohen as well. His singing and acting was astonishing. I reckon this was probably because of his complete contrast from his role as ‘Borat’, which I found to be extremely ridiculous even though I never watched it. Enough said, the fact that he could pull off this character in ‘Sweeney Todd’ was refreshing enough to me.
In conclusion, I highly recommend that you watch this delightfully gruesome movie. Two thumbs up for this one!!
